Donor Egg IVF

Let the Process Begin…

  • January 18, 2016 – Consult with Dr. H regarding Donor Eggs
    • Start Birth Control for 1 Week – Stop Birth Control for 1 Week, call to schedule HSG
    • DH did Genetic Mapping blood work to rule out anything while we wait
    • Financing Approved – Pending documents
  • January 19, 2016 – Waiting on Donors
    • Nurse promises she will try to get donor profiles emailed to me.  She promises she will have something to me by the end of the week.
  • January 26, 2016 AM – Yep Same Day – Double Bad news
    • Original financing cancelled, need to re-list with updated information based on their standards
    • Nurse called and no fresh donors available. Will get back with me in a week if anyone else comes up, also mentioned going through frozen donor egg bank
  • January 26, 2016 PM – Nurse Calls Back
    • Nurse called back to chat when I had more time and said they already had one potential donor come through less than a few hours after putting out a communication. She believes a few more will and we’ll be patient and wait to see what happens.
  • February 11, 2016 – HSG
    • Uterus looked great with no sign of scar tissue
    • Ovaries also looked great and tubes were open (not that that even matters but he checked anyways)
    • Nurse said two donors are in the beginning stages of approval. She will keep us updated. She mentions one donor actually called while we were there and has dark hair and hazel eyes.
  • Random calls back and forth with the nurse regarding donors. None yet. She says she is putting up flyers and all the local colleges and has had a “ton” of interest and has sent out a lot of packets to people who have called.
  • April 4, 2016 – “Discussion” with RE
    • Called and spoke to my RE directly as I did not feel like they were keeping us in the loop with any potential donors and I felt like I kept getting the run around as far as where people were in the process. Everything was always “next week”. Talking with him helped a lot and he was able to motivate the nurse and we got info on two potential donors.
  • April 11, 2016 – Nurse Discussion
    • I spoke to our nurse and she is currently processing two donors and trying to get them in for appointments. I’m not particularly thrilled with either one but they aren’t completely off the table. I like one of them more than the other but she is 29 and I kind of pictured us using a much younger donor.
  • May 11, 2016 – Still waiting…
    • I talk to the nurse and she said she is still trying to get the two donors in for appointments. I am a little frustrated by the lack of progress still and confront her about the fact that she told me “next week” almost two weeks ago. She said that one had to reschedule and she would call me when she had her appointment.
  • May 16, 2016 – Nurse Calls
    • The 29 year old donor had her appointment at the RE. The ultrasound and interview went well and they drew blood for infectious disease screening, genetic testing, and overall health overview. The nurse mentioned two other donors had called in but she didn’t know if they fit our criteria, she said if she didn’t call that meant they didn’t.
  • May 20, 2016 – Nurse Emails
    • The nurse gives me her email. Probably because I’m driving her crazy with phone calls and messages. We email and I find out that the donor had a cyst they are monitoring and gave her BC for, and her infectious disease screening came back clear. Waiting on the genetic testing blood work and re-check of the cyst. I’m still mostly in denial that this will happen and also trying not to stress out too much about the cyst. Also pay $189.40 for RE’s portion of HSG.
  • May 23, 2016 – New Prospective Donor (PD)
    • The nurse emails me about a new prospective donor who contacted her and she says she already has an appointment for Tuesday May 24 and she will call be by Wednesday with an update on her appointment. The overall description of this donor has me instantly more excited.
  • May 25, 2016 – Update on New PD
    • The nurse calls and informs me that the PD’s appointment went very well. Her follicle count was good, no cysts, and she said her physical attributes meet our criteria to a T and she is also very “sweet, intelligent, and kind”. I am in tears and finally feel like we have found the one. Now we just wait on the rest of her blood work and for her to start BCP!
  • May 31, 2016 – Donor starts BCP
    • I emailed the nurse with a few random questions and found out the donor started BCP today.
  • June 8, 2016 – 1/2 Blood test results
    • The donor coordinator nurse is on vacation so the other nurse calls me. She tells me that she is the one who found this donor and she spends over 15 minutes on the phone with me telling me how wonderful she is. She also tells me her infectious disease screen was clear and we are just waiting on the genetic test. She said the donor is ready to go when we are!
  • June 14, 2016 – Ugh
    • I called the nurse for an update and she still doesn’t have the genetics test. She tells me it usually takes 2 weeks and today it was 2 weeks. I remind her that today makes it 3 weeks so she says she will call and check on the results and it will probably be tomorrow before I hear anything.
  • June 15, 2016 – Payment $50.00 towards HSG
  • June 20, 2016 – 3:13pm
    • Our donor’s genetic test came back totally clear. The nurse emailed me to tell me she is approved and she will send me our calendar by end of day on 6/21. *lots of happy tears* Praise God we have gotten to this point!
  • June 21, 2016 – Tons-o’Stuff
    • The nurse sent the calendar, consent forms, and information on medications and lab work needed. The practice manager sent payment information. There was a slight change in price for the initial payment since we met with them in January but the doctor agreed to let me keep the original cost that was quoted to us. Saves us $3k!
  • June 22, 2016 – BCP & Doxycycline
    • Pick up meds from local pharmacy. BCP is free but Doxycycline after insurance is $48.00. Start taking BCP until 7/4/2016. Doxy starts on 7/7/2016 for DH and day of transfer for me.
  • June 23, 2016 – Money-Money-Money
    • Write check to RE for $18,500 for DE IVF program fees (donor meds/ compensation/etc.)
    • Wire Transfer $191.71 to WIN Pharmacy for Crinone Gel 8%, Estrace 2mg, Progesterone in Oil (PIO) 50mg.
  • June 26, 2016 – Insurance
    • Call insurance and verify infectious disease tests are covered and find lab to do test. Will go Friday for test with DH. Spoke to nurse and she said Donor started Lupron Saturday and is a “Rock Star” 🙂
  • June 28, 2016 – Acupuncture #1
    • I had my first acupuncture appointment and sobbed during most of it. The acupuncturist assures me this is normal. $110.00
  • July 9, 2016 – Start Estrace
    • Start taking 2 pills a day
  • July 11, 2016 – Hubby starts Doxycycline
    • DH starts taking Doxy (antibiotic) 10 days before scheduled retrieval (precaution)
  • July 14, 2016 – Acupuncture #2
    • I go to my second acupuncture appointment. She seems focused on my headaches and bloating and doesn’t ask anything about my IVF. She sticks in a few and leaves the room. The CD she plays is on Repeat 1 and it irritates me the whole session. After I leave I have a voicemail from her asking if I’m coming to my appointment, so I thinks she thought I was someone else. I decide I’m not going back. $107.84
  • July 15, 2016 – Nurse Follow-up
    • Nurse emails and say labs looks good so far and an ultrasound in the next couple days will give us more news
  • July 17, 2016 – Bump up Estrace
    • Start taking 3 pills a day
  • July 18, 2016 – RE and Nurse call (Donor cycle cancelled)
    • Conference call from my RE and nurse. The donor is not responding well at all to medications and my RE doesn’t feel comfortable moving forward with her. With a recent family tragedy I totally break down.
    • The nurse tells me they might have another donor that came up while we were starting our cycle, she emails me the information and tells me she will get to work on her stuff ASAP.

Donor Approved! (Finally)

  • July 22, 2016 – Nurse calls (New *Proven* Donor)
    • A former donor that has given them great numbers and results just came home from a semester abroad and is looking to donate. Her physical characteristics match up with ours perfectly and we are starting our new calendar August 6, 2016. Start BCP today.
  • August 6, 2016 – Start Estrace (Again)
    • Start taking 2 pills a day
  • August 8, 2016 – Hubby starts Doxycycline (Again)
    • DH starts taking Doxy (antibiotic) 10 days before scheduled retrieval (precaution)
  • August 14, 2016 -Bump up Estrace
    • Start taking 3 pills a day
  • August 15, 2016 – The Wreck
    • I was in a head on collision after someone crossed the center line. Totally my car and breaking my right foot.
  • August 16, 2016 – Lining & E2 Check
    • Lining = 7 (Estrogen level was normal, they didn’t give me numbers)
  • August 18, 2016 – Start PIO (1ml) and Crinone Suppository
  • August 20, 2016 – Egg retrieval & Fertilization
  • August 21, 2016 – Retrieval & Fertilization Numbers
    • The lab called and the donor gave us 25 eggs. Out of those 25, 15 were growing and maturing as they should.
  • August 23, 2016 – Day 3 Update
    • The lab called we have (1) 9 cell, (7) 8 cell, (2) 7 cell, (4) 5 cell, (1) 3 cell. It’s looking like we have 10 really good ones right now.

Transfer #1 (Fresh)

  • August 25, 2016 – Day of Transfer
    • We transferred 2 beautiful blastocysts. The transfer went very smoothly and the lab said we were winning the lab beauty pageant for our beautiful embryos ❤
  • August 26, 2016 – Lab Update on Remaining Embryos
    • The lab called and they froze 4 embryos on Day 5 and 4 embryos on Day 6. We have 8 snowflakes waiting….just in case…
  • August 28, 2016 – ER Visit
    • Went to the ER for horrible pain in my right leg. Because of the trauma from the broken foot I now have a blood clot in my femoral artery. I call me RE and he talks to the RE doctor and they prescribe be Lovenox shots twice a day for the blood clot. It’s also safe for pregnancy.
  • August 29, 2016 – Admitted
    • After speaking to my RE and the doctor on call regarding my blood clot, they want to admit me. Due to all of the different variables my RE would feel more comfortable with me being monitored on blood thinners for a couple days. I throw up that night in the hospital bed.
  • August 30, 2016 – Feeling Sick
    • The smell of food is making me sick, I am in a lot of pain from the blood clot in my leg, and they have to give me medication for my nausea, I KNOW I am pregnant.
  • September 1, 2016 – Beta #1 (7dp5dt)
    • I am still in the hospital because they are having a hard time regulating my clotting levels. I have already felt the nausea subside and I know that this pregnancy is not sticking. They decide to do a beta. Beta #1 = 10. My nurse tells me to remain optimistic.
  • September 3, 2016 – Beta #2 (9dp5dt)
    • Beta #2 = 17 (from what I remember) I am still in the hospital and completely devastated. I have to continue all medications for more one beta. Just in case.
  • September 5, 2016 – Beta #3 (11dp5dt)
    • Beta #3 = >5. I don’t remember the number but I know it was low. I hopped to the bathroom and ripped off my estrogen patches and put away all of my medications in my over night bag. I am discharged from the hospital and sent home on oral blood thinners for 90 days.

Miscarriage #3 (#1 from DE IVF)

  • September 9, 2016 – Miscarriage/Chemical
    • I start heavy bleeding that lasts almost two weeks. Due to the blood thinners this is worse than ever.

On oral blood thinners that I cannot take during IVF/Pregnancy. Waiting until I am off of these before we do a FET.

Waiting/Attempting another Transfer

  • October 14, 2016 – Payments
    • I finally pay a few of the bills for our IVF. I have been avoiding everything since our chemical.
    • $775.00 for Cryopreservation of 8 Embryos
    • $179.34 for Infectious Disease tests (required for IVF)
  • November 25, 2016 – Discontinue oral blood thinners per my Dr. and start BCP in anticipation of FET.
  • December 7, 2016 – Receive calendar for FET. Scheduled tentatively for 1/19/17.
  • December 19, 2016 – Go to Dr. for severe leg pain in same leg as first blood clot. Diagnosed with another blood clot and put back on oral blood thinners. FET is cancelled until I am seen by a hematologist.
  • December 29, 2016 – I am seen by a hematologist. I am put on Lovenox (injection blood thinner) and lots of blood work is done. I have met my out of pocket for the year so my Lovenox is free but I know this will change in January. $0.00
  • December 31, 2016 – Pick up Doxycycline that was called in even though FET is cancelled because it is currently free with our deductible being met.$0.00
  • January 19, 2016 – I have my follow up with the hematologist. He mentions MTHFR and that I am on injection blood thinners until further notice. He tells me I am cleared to start my FET and he will send all notes over to RE.
  • January 23, 2017 – I get a price estimate from the pharmacy and a 30 day supply of Lovenox will be $2,361.32 until I meet my $5k deductible for the year. I call the hematologist nurse as my Dr. told me to if the price was too high and she says that her and the doctor will see if they can find a way to get it cheaper for me. I also ask her about my MTHFR test and she said that it is listed as, “homozygous”.
  • February 1, 2017 – After no help from my hematologist we get my RX for Lovenox for 30 days. $2414, 25
  • February 15, 2017 – Pick up Provera and Doxycycline for upcoming FET $20.45
  • February 18, 2017 – Start Provera for 10 Days
  • February 27, 2017 – Last Provera, waiting for AF…
  • March 4, 2017  – Still no AF, Dr. wants ultrasound and Progesterone level to see if we can proceed. Results = Lining is too thick for this early, cancelled FET and given another medicine (fill in name later – not sure what it was?) to try and get AF.
  • March 16, 2017 – Get refill of Lovenox $2431.47
  • March 22, 2017 – After some irritation, and confusion I start the next medicine to try and get AF
  • March 31, 2017 – Last Pill, waiting for AF…
  • April 5, 2017 – AF Arrives!
  • April 7, 2017 – Start Estrogen (2 pills daily), receive FET calendar!
  • April 19, 2017 – Bump up Estrogen (3 pills daily) and it’s totally kicking my butt!
  • April 20, 2017 – Progesterone check (.2 which is perfect) and pay for FET. $2262.50
  • April 22, 2017 – Start PIO (2ml IM injection daily) in a hotel in Louisville, KY while visiting family

Transfer #2! (FET)

  • April 27, 2017 – Transfer day!
    • We show up for the transfer and get all checked in. Once we get settled in our little room the lab comes to speak to us. They thawed a third because the second was not looking viable, but the second caught up and now we have three. We wait for RE to make a decision. The decision is made by RE (and husband LOL) that we will transfer 2 and the slow starter will be refrozen and added to the end of the line as a possible third if a later FET is needed). The RE and the nurse say the transfer goes perfect. I sleep for a while during my hour wait and then go home and enjoy an afternoon in bed.

Pregnant!

  • May 3, 2017 – First BFP! (5dp5dt)
    • At just 5 days after a 5 day transfer I get an obvious BFP on a FRER. I actually test every day without telling Hubby because I want to surprise him with the beta (which he thinks is Monday but is actually Friday).
  • May 5, 2017 – Beta #1 (8dp5dt)
    • Beta is 97! The nurse is excited about this number so early. I go home early and arrange baby Nike’s in a show box with our beta written on the top. We have my dad and step-mom over and tell them as they are the only ones who know we have done a transfer. I start Prenate Mini (RX prenatal for women with MTHFR)
  • May 6 and 7, 2017 – The news!
    • We tell our niece “T” in front of our family with a  “Big Sis” shirt and I catch the whole thing on camera. We Facetime other family members that weren’t there and invite my grandparents over for dinner on the 7th to tell them.
  • May 8, 2017 – Beta #2 (11dp5dt)
    • Beta is 220. It is not quite doubling (doubling time of about 60 hours) so they agree to a repeat on Wednesday to help my anxiety.
  • May 10, 2017 – Beta #3 (13dp5dt)
    • Beta is 360. It has slowed and the doubling time is now more like 64 hours and not rising at all like they want. My RE says there is still a chance and says we should just take a break with blood tests and we will recheck Monday.
  • May 11-14, 2017 – Convinced
    • I am convinced it’s over. I feel little to no symptoms at all anymore and my tests are looking weird so I try to enjoy Mother’s Day with Trinity and I am in tears by Sunday night not wanting the weekend to end because I am just sure that I will find out it’s all over Monday.
  • May 15, 2014 – Fourth and Final Beta (18dp5dt)
    • Beta is 2591!!!! The nurse and RE wanted over 1500 so we are all relieved and ecstatic that they have jumped so high. Ultrasound is scheduled for Thursday 5/25 @ 10:30 am. AHH!!!!
  • May 25, 2017 – The first ultrasound (6w5d)
    • We went to the RE office where we were put in a conference room to wait for our scan. (We assume they do this because there is another scan and they don’t want us to see them leave or something) We then go in and both of our nurses, our RE, and a doctor he has training with him all are in the room when we see our little bean for the first time, and the flicker of the heartbeat! The ultrasound seems to go so fast and it’s over before I want it to be. I cry big happy tears as my nurse gives me a big hug then giggles and tells me to put my pants on and I’ll get hugs outside the ultrasound room.
  • May 27, 2017 – Light Spotting
    • We are out of town all day and when we get home I notice some very light spotting. I spend the rest of the evening in bed and drinking lots of fluids. It doesn’t return.
  • June 2, 2017 – Another Ultrasound(7w6d)
    • This time our RE and one of our nurses are there. The ultrasound lasts a little longer and they make sure I have time to take videos from my phone and we get to hear the heartbeat! A totally surreal experience and I am in total shock we have made it to this point. Our RE tells my husband that because we I am so special to him he is going to keep me longer than most patients and we will have a couple more weekly ultrasounds before we “graduate”.
  • June 4, 2017 – More Spotting
    • I sleep in for the first time in a while, when I wake up I have more spotting, and this time it is a little more red than I would like. I am shaking and I call the nurse and she is calm and reassuring and tells me it seems like the internal ultrasounds are causing this spotting because two days after my first ultrasound I spotted as well. It only happens once that morning and goes away.
  • June 7, 2017 – More Spotting
    • I’m at work and see a little more tiny light pink spotting. I text my nurse and she reminds me that as long as it’s light and I have no real cramping or lots of blood that everything is fine. It only happens that one time again and I am convinced this child is a boy and is already trying to scare me like his father.
  • June 9, 2017 – Another ultrasound (8w6d)
    • Our baby now looks much more like a little person and not a blob. We can see the heart beating away and get to see it wiggle. The heartbeat is so much stronger and louder than last time and the Dr. estimates it’s around 160bpm. (I don’t know why but they never give me exact numbers.) We are told we have one more appointment and then we graduate to our OB. I get very emotional even thinking about it…
    • That night we take our announcement photos and I post on social media, I go public the next day on the blog when I have time to sit and write out a post. We are so thankful for all of the love and support.
  • June 16, 2017 – “Last” Ultrasound with RE
    • We go in for what we think is going to be our last ultrasound with our RE before we are released to our OB. We take in a big Edible Arrangement with thank you balloons. They are running weirdly behind and our RE is actually the one who calls us back for our u/s which has never happened. He then decides to start the u/s himself because the nurses are incredibly busy which is oddly the first time he has ever done one of our u/s. Almost as soon as the u/s starts I see that there is no heartbeat and the baby that was moving and looking very healthy at the last u/s looks much different. In a whirlwind our RE tells us he believes this is a certain chromosome issue and that we will need to schedule a D&C. It’s a hazy hour of sobbing in the u/s room and talking to the RE about what’s next and we leave to come home.

Miscarriage #4 (#2 from DE IVF)

  • June 19, 2017 – D&C
    • We go in for a D&C and our RE says he will send it off for testing to confirm what he is almost positive of regarding the chromosomes. The bleeding and cramping is much worse than I’ve experienced before (which my RE had told me it probably would be) because I’m so much further along this time. It takes a while to get my pain under control so I can go home. I spend the rest of the day in bed watching movies with hubby and sleeping.
